🌱 Shot 1: Growth Thought of the Week

“What’s If” isn’t a thing

My wife and I were having a heart-to-heart recently - where we tell each other the little niggly things that get on each other’s nerves… She alerted me to my habit of saying ‘what’s if…’ about things eg What’s if we watch Midsomer Murders tonight…

Turns out ‘what’s if’ isn’t a thing. And I’ve been saying it for the last 25 years! My mind is blown.

Not sure why I’m telling you this, except perhaps to highlight that long held understandings are sometimes totally wrong.

In other news - ‘supposably’ is actually a word. (Yes, if you were a Friends fan you’ll remember that episode with Joey).

✨ Shot 2: Quick Shots of the Week

Here’s a few quick items of interest we noticed:

  • Redesigned HubSpot Template Marketplace now offers new standalone modules (again)
  • Inbound Calling tab now has a dedicated window which enables you to receive inbound calls in your HubSpot browser. The page must remain open to receive inbound calls.
  • Working Hours + Custom VoicemailWorking hours and custom voicemailManage voicemail
  • AI-powered Location Formatting Suggestions for Contacts and Companies in Ops Starter, Ops Pro, Ops EnterpriseFix formatting issues

🚀 Shot 3: HubSpot Marketing Feature of the Week

Social Calendar vs Campaign Calendar

There’s two main calendar tools in HubSpot:

  • Social calendar - just for seeing social posts
  • Campaign calendar - which can show all main campaign asset items

Here’s the social calendar:

HubSpot social calendar

Here’s the Campaign calendar, just showing social posts:

HubSpot Campaign Calendar

Pros and Cons of each Calendar

  • If managing social, the social calendar is slightly easier to use in my opinion, because it shows more details about the post
  • Social calendar includes showing the image when clicking to see a preview of the post
  • But the Campaign calendar is much better for showing all the marketing events (see screenshot below)
  • Campaign calendar allows you to save Views of your criteria
  • Note: Adding dates to Campaigns is now important, as it will show on the calendar

Example of Campaign calendar showing all marketing event types:

💰 Shot 4: HubSpot Sales Feature of the Week

Contact Views for Sequence activity

This is a contact view that we added when a customer asked how do you tell if a contact has been in a sequence and when was the last time they were in a sequence.

To do this you need to filter Now in Sequence is equal to False and add to your view the columns Last Sequence Ended Date and as a precaution the Recent Sales Email Opened Date.

This will give you a good indication of the contact and when they have been in a sequence.  We suggest adding the columns below and saving that view.

Contact views for sequence activity

Here is a potential use case for this: If you often have contacts that belong to multiple deals/projects, in this case then someone could have been in a sequence not too long ago.  So sales wanted to make sure that they had not recently been in a particular sequence.

👨‍🔧 Shot 5: HubSpot Workflow Feature of the Week

Workflow Settings for Performing Actions at Specific Times

Workflow settings allow you to constrain when workflow actions will execute.

For example, you may want to keep workflow actions within business hours, and possibly avoid on public holidays as well:

You can also get very granular (the following isn’t a suggestion per se, it’s just an example of what’s possible):

🔥 Shot 6: CMS Hub Limitation of the Week

Child Theme Limitations

There’s a limit to how many Child themes you can have in a portal.

According to the HubSpot Developer docs:

The total number of child themes you can have is based on your subscription:

  • Marketing Hub Professional or CMS Hub Professional: five child themes
  • Marketing Hub Enterprise or CMS Hub Enterprise: 10 child themes
  • HubSpot's free tools and CMS Hub Starter: one child theme

My question: Why?

Why would you limit this?

We ran into this limitation this week… very frustrating.

I’m going to raise a ticket with Support to see if they have any context around this.

🔧 Shot 7: HubSpot Gotcha Item of the Week

Preview URLs aren’t tracked

Accidentally copying a preview URL and using it in a QR code.

We discovered that when a client was looking at their landing page report and saw no traffic when they distributed thousands of flyers.  It was looking like this:preview URLs in traffic analytics

What we discovered is that they had copied the preview URL from HubSpot and therefore it was not registering in the traffic analytics.  We also did not initially see it when we forwarded the link to someone to test as Apple seems to strip this when you share or AirDrop it!

This is what you see if you hovered and dragged the URL over the screen:

📚 Shot 10: Thought of the Week

Headline Writing

A nice anecdote from Taylor Lorenz (Substack link) on the skill of writing headlines.

She writes:

The headline that was written, I think I had written on Facebook, or one of my team did, was like, “Whale spotted for the second time.” And [editor Martin Clarke] was like, “No, it’s the whale that can’t stay away,” and “Here, you need to tell this story and you need to frame it.” I just learned a lot through that in terms of storytelling.

✍️ Shot 11: Quote of the Week

“On a given day, a given circumstance, you think you have a limit. And you then go for this limit and you touch this limit, and you think, 'Okay, this is the limit'. And so you touch this limit, something happens and you suddenly can go a little bit further. With your mind power, your determination, your instinct, and the experience as well, you can fly very high.”

🏋️ Shot 12: Training of the Week

A Good Overview of AI (as of July 2023)

Ethan Mollick (Professor at Wharton) provides a good overview of the state of play in AI as of July 2023.

He breaks down the main categories of AI tools, their strengths and weaknesses, and how you can consider applying them in your life (business or otherwise).

From the article closing:

  • AI is a tool. It is not always the right tool. Consider carefully whether, given its weaknesses, it is right for the purpose to which you are planning to apply it.
  • There are many ethical concerns you need to be aware of. AI can be used to infringe on copyright, or to cheat, or to steal the work of others, or to manipulate. And how a particular AI model is built and who benefits from its use are often complex issues, and not particularly clear at this stage. Ultimately, you are responsible for using these tools in an ethical manner.

Well worth a read.
